Jim Butski was named the head coach for the men’s volleyball program that began intercollegiate varsity competition in the 2015-16 year. The team finished their first season with a 6-15 record Butski came to Trinity from Bluefield College in Virginia where he served as head coach for their men’s and women’s volleyball programs. He led their women’s team for two years and helped start their men’s program in the 2014-2015 season.
Butski has been involved in coaching volleyball at the collegiate, high school, and club levels for the 16 years. Prior to his time at Bluefield, he coached the women’s volleyball team at Florida Christian College (now Johnson University-Florida), a NCCAA Division II school, for three seasons. He led the Suns to a season win record and earned NCCAA DII South Region Coach of the Year honors.
At the high school level, Butski coached at Indian Rocks Christian School in Largo, Florida, where he led the team to their first winning season in 2003. He also was an assistant at Martin County High School in Stuart, Florida, from 2004-2009, and helped that program to a state championship.
From 2003-2011, Butski coached multiple club teams and has had four teams earn top ten finishes at the AAU/USAV Nationals. He has been heavily involved in camps and clinics for various age levels and has served as both an individual and team camp instructor and a camp director. He currently possesses USAV CAP II certification and has been active with USAC HP programming at the state level.
Butski, a Michigan native, graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology. He earned his master’s degree in Adult Education/Distance Learning from the University of Phoenix, Online Program. He has served as a high school science teacher and also, from 2002-2008, served in Costa Rica as a volunteer field guide and then as a Missions Director for Going the Distance Adventure Ministry.
In addition to coaching the men’s volleyball team, he is an assistant coach and lead recruiter for the women’s volleyball program. Butski resides in Lemont, Illinois.
Gerard Weik joined the men’s volleyball coaching staff for the inaugural season last year. In addition to assisting the men’s team, he is also an assistant coach for the women’s volleyball teams. He has a wealth of coaching experience at the collegiate and club levels. For ten years he was involved with the women’s and men’s volleyball programs at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. During his time with the Flyers their men’s team claimed a conference championship and Final Four appearance in 2012 and their women’s team earned regular season champion titles for six years and were tournament champions three times.
For the past ten years Weik has been involved as a coach and assistant director for Celtic Force Volleyball. He was also been a part of Chicago Volleyball Club for four years. In addition he served two years as the boys’ volleyball coach at Lockport High School.
Weik is the facility manager at Palos Courts. He and his wife Lindsay reside in Alsip, Illinois.
Rob Prohaska ‘04 became a member of the coaching staff in the 2015-16 season. He brings a wealth of experience as he has been involved in volleyball as a player or coach for the past 23 years. As a coach he has served at the high school and club level. He has coached at Second City and Adrenaline volleyball clubs and is currently part of the coaching staff as the head boys’ 18U coach for Division One Volleyball Club. He served as an assistant coach for the boys’ team at Marist High School for five seasons from 2008-12. During his time there the team earned four conference championships, three regional championships, two sectional championships, and IHSA state quarterfinal appearance and a state championship title.
As an athlete Prohaska played for Trinity in the 2001 and 2003 seasons and ranks in the top six in the records book in total kills and blocks. Previous to Trinity he competed for two seasons at Moraine Valley Community College where he earned Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player honors. In addition, Prohaska was a four-year student-athlete at Marist High School and received all-conference and all-state honorable mention recognition. He also played for Second City Volleyball Club for four years.
Rob graduated from Trinity in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He earned his master’s degree in school counseling from Concordia University. He is currently completing requirements to become a licensed professional counselor in the state of Illinois. He lives with his wife and three children in Palos Heights, Illinois.
